Polish, polish and polish some more
In my reading recently, I’ve had a real sense of appreciation for those people who can write with an almost musical talent; the way their words flow tunefully like a wonderful song.
I think of the hours that Roald Dahl spent ensuring his manuscripts sang to children. It is easy to understand why they are so treasured to this day and, most likely, will be for many more generations.
Other stories, which seem to offer a similar song for children, include those by Emily Rodda, Anh Do and Aaron Blabey, with Nick Bland thrown in (What Bear type are you?).
These books, while in the children’s genre, certainly prove that literature can be music to your ears, as well as to your head. And, of course, your heart.
“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” Roald Dahl, The Twits.
