Am I writing too fast or too slow?
Perhaps the better question is ‘why are you spending all this time thinking and reading about publishing a book?’
Understanding your ‘why’ will answer many of the questions first time (and long term) writers go through each time a book idea comes to mind. If you do not have any intention to publish your writing, then write at any place you want as no one will be any wiser. However, stop wasting time reading blog posts that are not relevant to your goals.
If you are reading this blog, I am guessing that you are thinking about publishing a book. If this is correct, then you should set yourself a short timeline to ‘get your book to print’. By this, I suggest three to six months to have your book published.
Hang on…I hear you say ‘Didn’t your earlier post say work out if you write fast or slow and then pace yourself?’
It did. So the commercial decision you need to make is ‘How much content can you create in that timeline and then publish your book?’
If you think that is not achievable, you may want to seek out other people to help you. There is only so much you can do by yourself. You do not want to skip or miss any important parts of the publishing process. This will only cost you money down the track.
Independent publishing, makes this timeline achievable. If, however, you are interested in finding a large publishing house that will do the full kit and caboodle for you, then your timeline will need to be two years before you see the paperback version on your desk.
Think about why you are writing your book and what you want to achieve. Understand your goals and why you started this journey. This will clarify how you are likely to proceed with your book publishing.
Still not sure. Independent publishing can be a great pathway for you to test your feet in the water before you seek out that big contract with a publishing house and hope to become the next best seller.
Work out what it is that you want – why you want to write and publish your book – then you are more likely to achieve your goal.
